Located on the quiet waters of the west end of St. Croix and just a half-mile from the quaint, non-touristy town of Frederiksted we are a simple 10-minute ride from the airport. In fact, Cottages by the Sea is one of the closest hotels to the airport. The road we are on is a dead-end beach road not typically or frequently traveled, which keeps us quieter and safer. To the south of us is the area of the island called Sandy Point, where there are miles of mostly isolated sandy, white, uninhabited beaches ready to be explored. To our southeast is a large salt pond, which helps to isolated run off from our end of the island, which helps to keep out waters clean and clear. At the end of our road, a half-mile to the south, is the “Vincent F. Mason Memorial Park”, a sleepy, small park with a public swimming pool and picnic tables. Past this park is a national wildlife refuge for nesting turtles, Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge, which is closed 5 days a week during the summer months and closed completely to the public from April 1 to Sept 1 for the care and protection of the endangered turtles that nest there yearly.
Directly adjacent to our hotel, to the north, is a delightful restaurant called, “The Beach Side Café”, open for lunch and dinner 5 days a week. The restaurant is part of Sandcastle on the Beach, our neighboring hotel to the north. Between our two hotels, we could accommodate larger groups or events up to 100 people or more. The amenities at Sandcastle on the Beach are also available to our guests for a daily fee (morning continental breakfast, exercise room, spa, and two small swimming pools).
A half-mile to our north is the quaint town of Frederiksted, built in the Danish architecture style of the 1700’s. The road into town is popular for walking, biking and exercising during the day but is not good for walking to/from town after dark (too dark and isolated). We can assist you with transportation after dark.
From our beach looking toward the north, is a spectacular view of the Frederiksted Pier, downtown Frederiksted, and the grassy green mountains of the rainforest. On a few days of the year you can catch a dramatic view of a cruise ship in dock, but we are far enough away to not get the hustle and bustle of cruise ship tourists (a common question). In the mornings, you might sometimes see local racehorse trainers swimming/riding/training their horses in the water just to our north – an entertaining and unusual sight to see.
Our west-end location benefits us with calm, clear, waters, sandy beaches, easterly trade winds and peaceful, colorful, spectacular sunsets. You will also appreciate not having to cross a road or travel down a hill to get to the beach. In fact, the topography of our beach is such that it allows for all of the cottages to be situated unusually close to the waters edge – only 25 to 75 steps away from any of the cottages. The slope of our beach puts us about 10-15 feet above sea level, giving us a view over the water and the safety from the surf.
An even more unusual and unknown fact about our location is that we are just miles away from one of the few amphidromic points in the world – a point of no tide and equilibrium. We have virtually no noticeable tide on our beach, keeping currents and beach movement generally to a minimum. Additionally, St. Croix is one of the only islands in the Lesser Antilles that is completely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and not located on the divide between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Being completely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea makes our waters slightly warmer, calmer and more tropical. Our gem-clear, turquoise water is inviting and beautiful to look at, with temperatures ranging between 78 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, year round. Coral outcrops attract a wide variety of sea life, and the calm, gentle waters are hospitable to swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers of all ages. Our beach is without sea grass and seaweed and is excellent for finding sea glass and sea pottery, a popular hobby with our guests. Many people tell us our beach is their favorite beach and we hope it will be your favorite beach too.
